The importance of outside perspective to a business cannot be underestimated.
I had a brilliant reminder of this quote today and a quote that applies to so many individuals and businesses that I've worked with along the years.
This may well ruffle a few feathers, however, for many start up and more established companies and the individuals within them, the greatest enemy they can have to their organisation or career, is their arrogance and ego getting in the way, and the 'know it all already' attitude.
With over 80% of managers and leaders falling into the 'accidental manager' category, meaning, they have had no formal qualifications on how to manage, inspire, get results and lead, as a result, many times fear culture becomes an engrained part of an organisation in order for individual weaknesses to not be discovered.
Whether you're a CEO, CPO or an aspiring manager, a fresh pair of eyes, challenging questions and inviting new ways of thinking, can often provide the clarity and perspective needed to identify and solve problems that had you with your back against the wall not seeing the wood for the trees.
Although we do our best, realistically, when trying to run a company, hold down a job, lead teams of people and keep work / life balance in harmony (which could be hanging by a fragile thread) we are often, not the best assessors of how we show up and the impressions we leave to the people we have around us.
We excel at what it took to get us into the positions of power we may currently hold, but now, seeing the world from the outside, can feel like the greatest battle. And one that many avoid, much to the detriment of their businesses. Once highly successful thriving companies forced to go into unnecessary administration as the ego and resistance would not let them pivot and grow and up-skill where and when needed.
The 'busyness' culture that exists today, takes us away from the basics which are: to amplify we need to simplify and get REALLY good at what we do best. Strengthening our talents, discovering new ones and leading by example to maximise our impact.
As Bill Gates once said, “Everyone needs a coach. It doesn't matter whether you're a basketball player, a tennis player, a gymnast, or a bridge player.” “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.”
